Choosing the right paint colour for your bedroom

1) Select a range of colours so that when you get to a store you can narrow down your selection and avoid wasting time.
2) Usually you want to create a certain mood. Research has shown what colours evoke what mood.
Calm - soft blues, greens and lavendars - work well together.
Energizing - bright reds and yellows and you can add some orange. This will get you out of bed and on the go quickly.
Elegant - tans of off white, beige, maroon, gold.
3) Paint chips do not give you the full story. A colour on the wall will look different in a sunny room vs a darker room. The colour will change between day and night.
4) Colours can create an optical illusion of increasing or decreasing the size of a room. (more about this in the following topic)

What wall finish should I use for my walls?

Eggshell - best suited for washrooms and kitchen.
Low Sheen - slightly shiny; best suited for hallways and high-traffic area because of ease of maintenance.
Flat - no shine; elegant; best suited for bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms and ceilings. Now also available as 'washable flat finish'.
Satin - recommended for wooden surfaces (doors, trims, windows)
Glossy - very shiny; best suited for wooden surfaces (doors, trims, windows). Available in Low-gloss.

What is VOC-free paints?

VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds. These compounds have been found to be a major contributing factor to ozone, a common air pollutant which has been proven to be a public health hazard. VOC-low and VOC-free paints have reduced content of these compounds to specific government regulations. However, they are not totally free of these toxins. If you are interested in completely environmentally friendly paints there are green alternatives - natural paints, which are made primarily of naturally occurring materials like clay, lime, linseed oil and chalk - look for paints with the Green Seal logo.
